Ajman Ruler honours UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good Winners

His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman has honoured students and alumni of Ajman University of Science and Technology (AUST) for winning the first and second positions in the national competition of the UAE Drones for Good Award and the UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good in a grand ceremony held at the Ruler's Court.

Sheikh Humaid expressed his pride at the achievements of the smart students of AUST, urging faculty members to pursue their path towards modernisation, innovation and invention, and assist their students to implement innovative graduation projects focusing on modern technology and smart applications.

''It is a great honour to see the AUST students winning the two top slots in the UAE Drones for Good Award and UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good. Our hope is that these innovations will serve mankind, whether natural persons or with disabilities,'' His Highness added.

The Smart Guidance System for the Blind, a smart device invented by AUST engineering graduates, secured the first position in the national category for Artificial Intelligence Robots for Good and took home AED1 million in prize money. The invention was designed by Ajman University alumni Eng. Monther Al Shehabi, Eng. Abdullah Mohammed Ali, and Eng. Ahmed Mohammed Ali.

The Ruler and the audience listened to an explanation on how the new 250 gram device works. The project offers to help the visually impaired avoid obstacles, identify places or objects on their way and navigate from one place to another.

Twelve contestants competed in the finals of the AED9.3 million UAE Drones for Good Award and the UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good, the world’s biggest prizes in civilian applications of drones and robotics technology.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has recently honoured the winners of the second UAE Drones for Good Award and the first UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good in the presence of top dignitaries and international experts at the conclusion of a three-day competition event at Dubai Internet City.

Over the course of the three-day event last week, 40 semi-finalists in both the International and National competitions presented live demonstrations of their projects in front of an expert panel of international judges.

More than 1,000 projects were received from 165 countries in the UAE Drones for Good Award while UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good received over 660 submissions from 121 countries, reflecting the massive interest generated by the awards from all parts of the world.
