11 Technical Sessions on Second Day of IEEE International Symposium

The second day of the 9th IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology, hosted by Ajman University of Science & Technology (AUST), was marked by the great variety of topics covered. The plenary speaker, Dr. Kenneth Wilson, gave a presentation entitled "The Challenges of Building an Internationally Competitive Research Capacity in the UAE." In it he compared the research capacities of GCC countries and highlighted the challenges that must be met in order to enhance research activity in the UAE. In this context he stated that the knowledge economy is one of these challenges, and plays a predominant role in the creation of wealth, progress and the welfare state. Dr. Wilson also highlighted the importance of linking university research to economic and social development via well established and innovative systems. Furthermore, he explained the important role of the National Research Foundation (NRF) as a national research agency that uses international standards to determine research funding and to promote research.

Following the plenary session there were eleven parallel technical sessions during which dozens of experts and researchers from Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Iran, Lebanon, Portugal, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia South Korea, Taiwan, the UAE, the United Kingdom, and the US discussed topics which included adaptive filters, image processing, communications, advanced signal processing in nondestructive testing, biomedical, bioinformatics and radar processing.
