AU at National Taweya Exhibition in Abu Dhabi

Ajman University participated in the 6th edition of Taweya 2017 exhibition in Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from 30th of October to November 1. The AU Pavilion highlighted the community awareness programs supported by the colleges of Engineering, Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Dentistry in collaboration with the community service unit.

Students from the aforementioned colleges participated in presenting projects that aim to educate the society and raise awareness about various causes. The engineering college provided the virtual academy project, which aims to raise awareness on how to handle situation during natural disasters and crisis such as fire, earthquakes and electricity shocks. The program is designed to fit all ages with its risk free aspect. It excels in providing information for dealing with evacuation and quick responses to crisis alarm. The device is a wearable helmet and two handles that act as receptors for movement, the surrounding area is equipped with motion sensors to catch the signals. The virtual program in the end provides the user with a report containing the time he cleared the level and the mistakes he did.

In addition, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences provided the public with medical tests such as vital signs,  glucose level, blood pressure, and the Body Mass Index. The BMI test was conducted to raise awareness on the increasing weight issue in our society and the spread of diabetes in young children. The information from the BMI test was taken to create studies in the College on metabolic syndrome. The college also launched an awareness campaign on the importance of switching to natural antibiotics and fighting the abuse of antibiotics. The public was educated about the items that provide a natural antibiotic effect are ginger, onion, cardamom, garlic and honey.

Two doctors from the College of Dentistry provided free dental checkups and consultation for the fair visitors, especially the school students. The doctors also outlined the importance of keeping healthy teeth by daily brushing and routine checkups.

Two workshops were also conducted at the exhibition by students from the College of Pharmacy, entitled “Vital Sign” it aimed to raise awareness on the importance of vitamins. It highlighted 4 main points, the source of the vitamins, their importance to the body, the diseases caused by their deficiency, and the recommended daily intake.

The second workshop was titled “Save a Life” that aimed to teach the basics of First Aid procedures. The workshop discussed procedures in cases of suffocation or chocking, fires, how to give CPR, and how to stabilize broken limbs.

AU regularly participates in such national events which give its students an active opportunity to contribute positively to the community. It encourages their passion to be an engaging part of the society they live in. All members of the AU community undertake initiatives in their respective fields to promote an awareness campaign or raise awareness about an issue.
