The rapid growth of e-commerce and urbanization has resulted in a significant increase in the demand for parcel delivery services. Consequently, firms must satisfy stakeholder demands while simultaneously maintaining operational efficiency and sustainability. This study examines value creation within the parcel delivery process by systematically reviewing 138 peer reviewed articles published between 2015 and August 2025 using PRISMA framework. The analysis identifies six core value criteria (economies of scale, learning economies, innovation capabilities, management capabilities, social and environmental aspects) and maps them across the stages of parcel delivery process. Findings highlight significant knowledge gaps in areas such as cargo security, customer decision-making, delivery personnel well-being, and environmental concerns. It calls for sustainable, innovative, and eco-friendly solutions, emphasizing emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twin, and the Internet of Things. By integrating these criteria into a structured framework, the study offers actionable insights for designing parcel delivery strategies that are operationally efficient, environmentally responsible, and socially beneficial.
Technology advancement in last-mile delivery is creating enormous opportunities for the industry's development. Current research is focused on unmanned aerial vehicles(drones) as an alternate delivery method for courier services. The data was acquired from a courier service provider in the United Arab Emirates that used the traditional home delivery option. The research was conducted using a Monte Carlo simulation and a real option technique to evaluate the project based on four scenarios. The study's findings suggest that the labor cost for home delivery has the most influence on project investment. It is recommended to bill the service at the same rate as a typical residential delivery. However, the service is offered at a price that is greater than the typical residential delivery while covering business taxes. The study's contribution is to evaluate the project by taking corporation tax payments and costs into account.
This study examines the potential of business investments in wind offshore farm in the United Arab Emirates through projection of five different possible scenarios. The evaluation was done by using real option approach and Monte Carlo simulation imbibing the potential risk on investment with the source of funds used. Our analysis indicates that the return on investments and the risk on delay option remain at the highest degree if the project is financed with 50% government support and 50% investor’s own equity. On the contrary, a 100% bank-financed project yields lowest investments return and lowest risk option to delay. This implies that the financial leverage and the high bank interest rate are significant factors in influencing the economic risk and return of the wind farm project. This research contributes to the existing literature by highlighting the significance of real options application in the most-sought energy sector – wind farm. Moreover, this will pave way for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the UAE to invest in this energy field.
