Students from Ajman University College of Medicine took part in summer research internships and clinical electives at leading universities, research institutes, and hospitals around the world. These opportunities were offered in collaboration with Ajman University’s international partners and affiliates.

This year, students joined research internships at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden; King’s College London, United Kingdom; University of Alberta, Canada; and Mahidol University, Thailand. They gained hands-on experience in medical research, worked closely with experienced faculty and researchers, and developed valuable research and professional skills. Their experiences included exposure to laboratory work, scientific methodology, and the role of research in advancing medical knowledge.

Students also completed clinical electives at institutions including University of Alberta, Canada; East Kent University Hospitals NHS Trust, UK; University of Malaya, Malaysia; and Ain Shams University, Egypt. These placements gave them the chance to experience different healthcare systems, observe a wide range of patient cases, and learn from medical teams across several specialties.

Together, these international experiences helped students broaden their perspectives, strengthen their clinical and research skills, and gain valuable experience that will support them throughout their medical careers.

Research Internships

Mahidol University, Thailand

“During my internship at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences at Mahidol University in Thailand, I had the opportunity to learn from highly experienced researchers and develop a wide range of research skills. I gained hands-on experience in wet laboratory techniques such as western blotting, qPCR, immunocytochemistry, and antioxidant assays, as well as exposure to advanced procedures including stereotaxic surgery and EEG in rats.

University of Alberta, Canada

“My study abroad experience in Canada gave me valuable exposure to both medical research and clinical practice. During the research portion, I observed laboratory work focused on liver fibrosis and atherosclerosis, including techniques such as protein electrophoresis and gel preparation. During the clinical portion, I observed gastrointestinal, cardiology, and orthopedic cases in the operating room. “My observership at Stollery Children’s Hospital in Alberta, Canada, was an incredibly valuable experience. I had the opportunity to observe a variety of pediatric surgeries and gain insight into different surgical specialties. I also spent two weeks in a biochemistry laboratory, where I learned more about laboratory work and medical research. University of Malaya, Malaysia

“I had a wonderful experience during my observership at the University of Malaya. I had the opportunity to observe various areas of Obstetrics and Gynecology, including the ultrasound unit, fertility clinic, antenatal care clinic, and labor ward. During my time there, I was exposed to a wide variety of cases and had the opportunity to learn from the doctors and other members of the medical team. Ain Shams University
