A Faculty from COPHS has Registered Intellectual Property with the UAE Ministry of Economy

COPHS’ faculty member, Alaa Al Amiry, has registered a ground-breaking intellectual property with the UAE Ministry of Economy for a novel metric titled “Years of Service Lost” (YSL).

Co-developed in collaboration with Dr. Sahel Alrousan, Senior Economic Advisor at UAE’s Ministry of Finance, YSL provides a new model to quantify the impact of occupational fatalities on workforce sustainability and economic productivity—critical for strategic planning, budgeting, and health economics. Benchmarking against globally recognized tools such as DALY, QALY, and the Gini coefficient, YSL represents an advancement in occupational health metrics by directly addressing the gap in measuring the loss of professional service years resulting from occupational fatalities across the different sectors.

Its future applications include informing public health policy, workforce retention strategies, insurance modelling, and resilience forecasting—locally and globally.

This milestone highlights Ajman University’s role as a driver of high-impact, policy-relevant research with tangible value for governments, NGOs, and multilateral organizations.
