Data Science & Business Analytics

Scope of the research and focus areas

Data mining is an interdisciplinary field bringing together techniques from machine learning, pattern recognition, statistics, databases and visualization to address the issue of information extraction from large databases.

Data Science & Business Analytics Research group aims to provide a high quality research that explore various application of data mining in different types of fields. These fields include but not limited to finance, marketing, government, and banking. The research group intends to build models to extract knowledge, find patterns, and generate insights and predictions from diverse data for various applications and visualization.

One of the most interesting area of the application of data mining is in the field of finance in which large amount of financial data being generated, accumulated, and analyzed. The research aims to utilize these massive amount of financial data using automated data driven analysis and modelling to help in strategic planning, investment, risk management and other decision-making goals is of critical importance.

The AU Strategic Plan requires enhancing the quality, relevance, impact of research and intellectual contribution and building impactful and long-lasting ties with the external communities. To align the research with AU Strategic, we focus on a research that serve the needs of UAE community.

Current research activities

In the first semester of the academic year of 2018/2019, the focus of the group will be the use of data mining technique to build models that are capable of predicting local stock exchange. In the second semester of the academic year 2018/2019, we are expecting to apply data mining and machine learning techniques to build models that help Ajman Government in various research fields.

Research Achievements

Up to this moment we have embarked in a research that aims to build models (utilizing data mining techniques) that are capable of predicting Dubai Stock exchange. The research is in collaboration with one of the members from the college of Business administration. We need this collaboration to provide expertise in the finance research field, because the research is an interdisciplinary one.

Large amount of data has been collected from Dubai Stock exchange. The data span the period of 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 20111, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Literature related to the application of data mining in finance has been conducted.

We have applied for acquiring Matlab software, one of the software which can be used to build data mining model and perform various analysis task. Once the software is acquired, we will start building the models and perform comparison with other models. We are expecting to publish one paper by September, 2018.

The joint research with the College of Business Administration attempts at measuring intellectual capital and predicting its association with corporate performance. This research uses data mining techniques and will be beneficial to the local financial sector. Currently we are at the data analysis stage and expect to finish the work by the end of first semester 2018/2019.
