The Department of Psychology at Ajman University participated in the Rare Disease Conference – Abu Dhabi 2026 through the contribution of Dr. Rasha Mohamed Abdelrahman, Head of the Department of Psychology, who delivered a workshop addressing the psychological and emotional challenges experienced by parents of children with disabilities.
The workshop, entitled “From Coping to Support: How Professionals Can Sustain Parents of Children with Disabilities,” explored the demands placed on parents and the role of professionals in providing meaningful and ongoing support to families. It highlighted the importance of understanding parents’ experiences, recognizing their emotional needs, and promoting approaches that strengthen parental well-being and family resilience.
The session emphasized the value of empathy, effective communication, and continuous psychological support in helping families navigate the challenges associated with caring for children with disabilities. It also encouraged professionals to move beyond short-term coping strategies and adopt sustainable, family-centred approaches that recognize parents’ individual circumstances and support their long-term well-being.
The conference brought together professionals and specialists to exchange knowledge and discuss issues related to rare diseases, mental health, disability, and the support needs of individuals and their families. It provided a platform for professional dialogue and collaboration, highlighting the importance of addressing the psychological and social dimensions of health conditions alongside other aspects of care.
