Academic Advising Workshop for Advisors and Resident Students Enhances Leadership and Collaboration

The Office of Students Housing, in collaboration with the Student Success Center (SSC), the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), and the Office of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA), conducted an effective academic advising workshop for college lead advisors and selected faculty members.

The workshop adopted an interactive, scenario-based approach, utilizing role-play activities and video simulations to address common academic advising situations. Participants collaborated on both scripted and student-developed scenarios, strengthening 21st-century leadership skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, adaptability, and ethical decision-making in academic advising contexts. In addition, the workshop allowed resident students to practice within the hostel environment, providing a realistic setting for applying advising scenarios in familiar contexts. It is worth mentioning that resident students actively participated, contributing real-life residential perspectives that enhanced student leadership, responsibility, teamwork, and communication within the residential community. The session encouraged participants to reflect critically on advising strategies, communication styles, leadership approaches, and decision-making processes.

Overall, the workshop promoted reflective advising, strengthened communication and leadership competencies, and enhanced collaboration across units, aligning with 21st-century leadership skills that support student success in both academic and residential settings.
