Community Service department at Ajman University launched an awareness campaign in collaboration with Thumbay Hospital in Ajman to mark the World Diabetes Day, on 14th November 2016.
The campaign includes lectures and activities that was officiated by Dr. Abdul Haq Al Nuaimi, Vice-Chancellor for Development and Communication. Dr. Maher Khalil, Internal Medicine Consultant, Endocrinology and Diabetes at Thumbay Hospital addressed the audience at the special lecture organized. He classified the various types of diabetes, which have been deemed a global pandemic by World Health Organization. He pointed out that in recent times there has been a sharp increase in the number of people affected by these and later manifest into threatening eyes and feet diseases.
He also gave valuable advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle therefore curbing the chances of being affected by this disease. He also outlined the genetic and environmental impact for Diabetes.
On the sidelines, this campaign includes checkups for students, staff and faculty members. They include blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and eye test. Dr. Fahmida Jafari, Nutritionist at Thumbay Hospital was at hand to give out advice. She advocated regular monitoring of blood, cholesterol and to quit smoking.
It is worth mentioning that the World Health Organization statistics indicate that in 2015 there were more than 422 million infected adults with diabetes, and the number of annual deaths due to complications from the disease is about five million people. The organization predicts that diabetes will occupy seventh place in the ranking among the leading causes of death by 2030.
