AUST Students Win 2nd Prize in National-Level Engineering Ethics Competition

Ajman University of Science and Technology’s engineering students began creating legacy in 2009 by winning one of the top three positions in the yearly national-level ethics competition, organized and hosted by Khalifa University. In 2013, AUST engineering students proved themselves yet again, by winning the second prize.

Ten teams from five major institutions, namely AUST, AUS, UoS, UAEU and KUSTAR participated in the Engineering Students Ethics Competition (ESEC) 2013. The aim of the competition was to provide engineering students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and appreciation of ethical issues and responsibilities.

The format of the competition is such that each team is provided with a case study that has to be analyzed in light of the IEEE Code of Ethics. After analyzing the case study each team is required to prepare a power-point presentation within limited time and make an oral presentation to a panel of judges from various non-participating institutions in the UAE.

The AUST winning team comprised two students from Electrical Engineering Department, Omar Majid Khalfan and Abdulla Shapshough, and one student from Biomedical Engineering Department, Abdul Khaliq Ismael. The team was supervised by Eng. Tazeen Sharif and Prof. Mustahsan Mir. The Head of Electrical Engineering Department and AUST IEEE Branch Counselor, Prof. Mustahsan Mir, also served as the Steering Committee Member for ESEC 2013.

One of the major contributing factors for the outstanding achievements of AUST students is the strategic decision taken by the Dean of the Engineering College, Prof. Fahar Hayati, to promote the University and the College through active involvement of engineering students in various competitions and scientific activities. The winners expressed sincere gratitude to the Dean and supervisors for their constant support and encouragement.
