Individual and group counselling:
Individual counseling:

There are many benefits to working in a therapeutic relationship with a professional counsellor on an individual basis. It can be a relief to tell someone who is impartial about difficulties you have struggled with on your own. You may have a longstanding concern, be encountering new difficulties, or simply have a sense that something is not right.

Group counseling

Open agenda group sessions can be an effective form of help for a range of problems, providing an opportunity to explore how you relate to others and benefit from their experiences and support.

* After registering for a meeting with the counsellor, the session will take place either in the office or via one of the tele mental health services (Zoom Meeting, phone consultation, or WhatsApp chat)

Advice for staff

If you are concerned about the welfare of a student, you can seek help to ensure that support and treatment is provided as early as possible. It is important to be able to recognize a problem, to know what options are available for help, and to recognize when to refer to an appropriate professional.

  • When to consider referring a student
  • Making a referral
  • What to do if you think the problem might be urgent
  • Protecting student confidentiality
  • Link Counsellor Program
  • Support for colleges and departments coping with a trauma
Students supporting students

One of the most valuable resources that students have during their time at University is each other. Providing support is not always easy, here are some thoughts that may help.

  1. Be realistic about what you can offer.
  2. Help build a support network. It is not a good idea for you to be your friend’s sole or main source of support. The burden could be too great for you, and you could also lose objectivity. It is important they have others to turn to and that you have someone to confer with when needed.
  3. Encourage your friend to seek professional help. It may help to explore what is getting in the way of them seeking help.

Student counselling unit offer the chance that a student could help other students academically by building a student network where they could discuss topics of the courses they study and explain ideas to each other.
