The Office of Sustainability has launched a series of awareness workshops titled “Rooted in Community: Protecting Our Mangrove Guardians,” supported by the British Council Alumni UK Climate Action Grant. The workshop aimed at motivating youth to engage with local environmental issues and connect them to global climate action through interactive games and hands-on educational experiences that enhance practical understanding of environmental concepts.
The series builds on Ajman University’s award-winning flagship environmental initiative, “Greening Communities: Mangrove Planting Project.” The program strategically reframes mangrove conservation not as a distant environmental issue, but as a tangible, community-driven, nature-based solution that participants can directly support and promote.
The workshops incorporate practical simulations and role-based activities to simplify complex scientific concepts, demonstrating how mangroves absorb significant amounts of carbon and play a vital role as natural coastal guardians while maintaining ecological balance. The program also highlights the link between mangroves and climate change and examines the social dimensions of environmental conservation.
The workshops aim to prepare informed participants who can transform environmental knowledge into impactful messages that support environmental policies and strengthen community engagement. Through this experiential learning approach, the initiative encourages participants to recognize their role as active contributors within a broader movement, where collective awareness becomes the starting point for sustainable change.
The series has been delivered across several schools, including National Charity School, Ajman American Private School, Sharjah American International School, Pakistan Islamia Secondary School – Ajman, Crown Private School, and Dubai Police’s Hemaya Schools, engaging approximately 375 participants and 22 organizers and volunteers. This broad participation has expanded environmental awareness and reinforced sustainability and climate action concepts among students at different educational levels.
This initiative reflects the Office of Sustainability’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness and embedding a culture of sustainability by empowering students and community members to actively contribute to environmental protection and support national efforts in addressing climate challenges.
