AUST Engineering Students Win Top Awards in Undergraduate Research Conference

The Fifth Annual Undergraduate Research Conference on Applied Computing (URC 2013) was held recently at Zayed University (Dubai campus). In this conference, a total of 182 student research projects were presented including 57 oral presentations and 125 poster presentations. Students from educational institutions in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, Oman, Kuwait, and Germany participated with their project presentations. Eleven student teams from the Electrical Engineering Department of College of Engineering at AUST participated in this conference. Four of these teams were from Ajman campus and they participated in oral presentations while seven teams were from Fujairah campus and they participated in poster presentations. There were two categories of awards; one for oral presentation and the other for poster presentation. The judging committee selected 4 out of 57 projects for oral presentation awards and 9 out of 125 projects for poster presentation awards.

AUST Electrical Engineering team from Ajman campus was awarded with the “Best Presentation Award” while the AUST Electrical Engineering team from Fujairah campus was awarded with the “Best Poster Award”. The student team winning the “Best Presentation Award” comprised of Laila Ghulam, Hibaq Yasin, and Manahil Mustafa. Dr. Ayman Tawfik is their Project Supervisor. The student team winning the “Best Poster Award” comprised of Abdelrahim Mohammad Abdelrahim and Khalifa Abdulla Suroor Al Sharqi. This team was supervised by Prof. Ali Abou El-Nour, Deputy-Dean of Fujairah campus, and Engineers Mussab Hasan and Mohamad Rehan Siddiqi.

 Winning two top awards by engineering students in this important conference is a clear indication of the quality of research projects of these students. Prof. Mustahsan Mir, Head of Department of Electrical Engineering was very pleased with this outstanding performance of students from the EE Department. The Dean of the Engineering College, Prof. Fahar Hayati, highlighted the increasing number of awards and prizes won by engineering students in various competitions at the national and regional level. He pointed out that the College of Engineering has put special focus on research and some important steps have been recently taken to further promote research in the College, especially inter-disciplinary research.
