Ajman University Contributes Towards Planting of 10,000 Mangrove Trees on World Environment Day

On the occasion of the World Environment Day on June 5, Ajman University participated in the National Mangrove Planting Project, under which 10,000 mangrove trees were planted across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to further the cause of sustainability.

The initiative was conducted in collaboration with the Government National Projects Office of the UAE government.

Under the initiative, 10,000 mangrove trees were simultaneously planted across various locations of the seven emirates of UAE. All the trees planted will count towards the UAE's goal of planting 100 million mangrove trees by 2030.

The project that aligns with the UAE’s ‘Year of Sustainability’, will be a major showcase at the UAE’s 51st National Day celebrations.

As a founding member of the "Nature Positive Universities Alliance," a joint initiative between the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and the University of Oxford, Ajman University took a leading role in the project, encouraging its staff, faculty, and students to participate as volunteers in the initiative.

Congratulating the AU community on their active participation in the initiative, Dr. Karim Seghir, Chancellor of Ajman University, said, “Ajman University is committed to promoting sustainability and climate action in line with its Climate and Sustainability Strategy 2022-2030. Partnering in impactful initiatives and campaigns related to climate change, environmental sustainability, and carbon neutrality as well as the UN SDGs, AU has been able to make a demonstrable contribution in this area. AU will continue to partner with the UAE government and other non-governmental organizations to achieve environmental goals and contribute to the UAE’s overall sustainability vision.”

An institution awarded the QS 5-Stars for social responsibility several times in the past few years, Ajman University recently hosted the ‘Make It Sustainable’ forum, a one-of-its-kind event to raise awareness about the significance of academia in promoting sustainability. The forum highlighted the crucial role of higher education institutions in shaping the future of our planet and fostered collaboration between academia, industry experts, NGOs, and government officials, ahead of the crucial and upcoming COP28 Conference on Climate Change in Dubai, UAE.
